How to Reconstitute Peptides with Bacteriostatic Water
Reconstitution is the process of turning a freeze-dried peptide powder into a liquid you can measure and use. Done carefully it is simple, but small mistakes at this stage change your concentration and waste material. Here is the full process for research handling.
What you need
- The lyophilized peptide vial
- Bacteriostatic water (contains 0.9 percent benzyl alcohol to inhibit microbes)
- A sterile syringe for adding water
- Alcohol swabs
Bacteriostatic water is preferred over sterile water for multi-use vials because the benzyl alcohol keeps the solution stable across repeated draws. Sterile or plain water has no preservative and is better suited to single use only.
Step by step
- Let the vial reach room temperature and swab both rubber stoppers with alcohol.
- Draw your planned volume of bacteriostatic water into the syringe.
- Insert the needle at an angle and let the water run slowly down the inside wall of the vial. Do not blast it directly onto the powder.
- Swirl gently. Do not shake. Shaking can shear delicate peptide chains and create foam.
- Wait until the solution is completely clear before use.
